Choir concert full of surprises

Those needing to lift their spirits this holiday season should plan on attending the Bemidji High School choir concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the school.

Performances by the school's Varsity, Bel Canto and A Cappella choirs, Madrigals and Lumberjack Men's Chorus, as well as the Bemidji Boychoir, will be featured. In all, 210 students will be singing.

"They are incredible," said BHS Music Director Chris Fettig. "I think all of the groups have been outstanding."

What makes this concert unique is the lineup of songs, some of which combine different choirs or soloists. The audience should plan on seeing a few surprises, as well.

Here are what a few students had to say about their favorite songs they will be singing at the upcoming concert:

- Senior Kiley Hazelton: "I like 'Joy to the World' and 'Angels We Have Heard on High.' They are such classic carols and can transport people back to another time."

- Senior Wil Hart: "I like 'Betelehemu: Nigerian Christmas Song.' It has a really nice African kick that is different than all the other songs we are going to perform."

- Senior Katie Kovacovich: "I like 'Joy to the World' and 'Night of Silent.' The mass choir sings 'Night' and I'll be playing piano. It's a really pretty piece."

- Senior Kyle Fodness: "My favorite is 'Betelehemu' because it's upbeat and it's different."

Admission is $1 for students and $2 for adults.
