Chester "Chet" John Benson, 71, of Bemidji, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at his home.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji with Rev. Mark Papke- Larson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji.
Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home of Bemidji assisted the family with arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Laura Rahr, Nancy Benson, Madison Benson, Duke Turnbull, Jay Benson, Myles Turnbull and Jack Benson.
He was born Oct. 16, 1937, to Samuel and Irene Porter Benson in Tolna, N.D. He grew up in Wilton and graduated from Bemidji High School in 1956. He enlisted with the United States Navy Sea Bee's and was honorably discharged in August 1960.
On Oct. 15, 1960, he married Diane Gerlinger in Baudette, Minn. He and his family resided in many parts of the country finally finding his way back home to Bemidji for his retirement and his granddaughter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, working with cement and visiting with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of Bemidji; daughters, Brenda Benson of Bemidji, Laura Rahr of Las Vegas, Nev., and Nancy Benson of Bemidji; a granddaughter; brother, Jay Benson of Becida; sisters, Susan (Duke) Turnbull of Frazee, Minn., Betty Lou Benson of Detroit Lakes, Irma (Harvey) Sonnenburg of Vergas, Minn., and Joanne (Erv) Cichy of Devils Lake, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sarah O'Grady and a nephew.
