Cheryl Malterud, 66, of Bemidji, MN, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.
Memorial Services will be 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bemidji with Rev. Allen Brooks (nephew) and Rev. Mike Fiske officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Cheryl Rae Piens was born March 4, 1946 in Pleasant Valley, MN to Clarence and Wiona (Schatz) Piens. She grew up in Stewartville through her school years, then attending Rochester Technical College. In February 1962 she married Hank Strunk, they were later divorced. In June 1971 she married Lee Butch Malterud. Cheryl worked in administration at International Transport. She and Lee bought the Elgin Meat Market. In 1976 they moved to Bemidji where she began working in the insurance industry. She also spent some time working at Bemidji Hospital. She obtained her insurance license and went back to working in insurance, working at Ken Stone Insurance and TruInsure. She loved serving her many customers in Bemidji. In her free time, Cheryl was active in the Eagles, serving as Auxiliary President. She loved friend and family time, reading, playing scrabble and traveling adventures.
She is survived by her husband, Lee Malterud of Bemidji; daughter, Renee (Jeff) Bilyeu of Morrison, CO; son, Daryl (Julie) Strunk of Arlington, TX; 5 grandchildren, Tim, Kristen, Tony, Shantelle and Tori; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Gloria (Bill) Mundstock, Lake City, MN and brother, Darby (Marlene) Piens of Phoenix, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Dean Piens.
