Bemidji City Manager John Chattin last week was elected to the League of Minnesota Cities' board of directors.

The election took place during LMC's annual conference, at which Bemidji also was honored as a "City of Excellence" by the LMC.

"I consider it quite an honor to be able to serve on the board," Chattin said.

Chattin said a person indicates an interest to serve on the board, submits an application and résumé, and is then interviewed by the nominating committee. The final step is an election from the general membership during the annual conference.

For 2007-08, LMC has a board president, a first vice president, a second vice president and 14 directors. There also are two ex-officio members, including the LMC past president.

"It's a good thing for the city, too," Chattin said. "(Bemidji will) have awareness much quicker of things happening at the state and national levels."

Chattin said during Monday's council meeting that it was nice being at the LMC conference again after spending several years at county-level events.

Chattin, who was hired in November as Bemidji's city manager, last was the county administrator for Swift and Yellow Medicine counties. Prior to that, he was the city administrator in Barnesville, Minn.
