City Manager John Chattin has done a satisfactory job in his first six months on the job.

The Bemidji City Council on Monday approved the minutes from the July 9 special work session in which the council reviewed Chattin's performance.

Chattin's review was conducted during a closed portion of the July 9 meeting.

Jim Brimeyer with Hopkins-based The Brimeyer Group Inc., which conducted the search for a new city manager last year, also attended the closed meeting.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Brimeyer met first with just the City Council, summarizing the results of the review and rating from councilors and city staff.

The council then met with Chattin and "a majority of the council believed Chattin's performance was satisfactory," the minutes said. Councilors noted that Chattin "does well with fiscal/business management and organization skills."

Three goals/objectives were given to Chattin:

E Provide weekly updates and improvement communication to the council.

E Expand works sessions on Mondays to include more than one relevant topic for discussion.

E Participate in a service group such as the Lions or the Rotary.

Chattin began working for Bemidji on Nov. 6. He was selected from a pool of six finalists, replacing David Minke, who left the city at the end of June last year for an administrative position in Castle Rock, Colo.

The council voted unanimously to hire Chattin at an annual salary of $89,000. The contract stipulates that if he receives a satisfactory performance evaluation after six months, his salary would be increased to $92,000. If after one year he again receives a satisfactory evaluation, his salary would increase to $95,000.

Chattin previously worked as the county administrator for Swift and Yellow Medicine counties, where he earned $90,000 annually.
