Charlotte 'Pearl' Stennes

Charlotte Pearl Stennes, 91, a long-time Park Rapids resident, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Park Rapids.

She was born to George and Elsie (Mienert) Fish in Rosebud, Mont., on April 25, 1917. She grew up in a family of five brothers and two sisters. At the age of 2 , she moved with her family to Fosston, where she received her schooling. As a young woman she was very active in her 4-H club and enjoyed attending dances with her brothers and sisters. After graduation she worked at a pharmacy in Fosston, then moved to Minneapolis where she worked as a nanny.

She married John Stennes on Feb. 4, 1945 in Erskine. After the war, they lived in Detroit Lakes until they moved to Park Rapids where they bought the Red Owl grocery store in 1948. They had two sons. They sold the Red Owl store and opened J&B Auto Parts in the mid-60s, which they operated until they retired in 1982.

She was a Sunday school and summer Bible school teacher at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids and a lifetime Circle member.

She is survived by two sons: John Karl (Marianne "Dolly"), of Grand Forks, N.D. and Richard, of Park Rapids; three granddaughters; a sister, Doris "Sis" (Jack) Rinkenberger, of Fosston; a brother, Buddy Fish, of Babbitt; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Leona Fish; and four brothers: Herb, Don, Leland and Harry.

Casket bearers: Maggie and Emily Stennes, Molly and Luke Luther, and Jeff Fick.

Honorary casket bearers: Larry and Barb Fick, Lloyd and Helen Stigman, Vi Grover, Katherine Foss, Ann Gravdahl, Mary Magelssen, Dorothy Melby and Alene Bjerklie.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, with Rev. Ken Nyhusmoen and Rev. Roger Olson officiating. The organist will be Roz Pederson. Brenda Carpenter will sing "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset." The congregational hymns will be: "How Great Thou Art" and "Be Not Afraid."

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 18 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids.

Interment: Bethel Cemetery in Park Rapids.
