Cass Lake driver escapes serious injury after semi/train collision

BEMIDJI -- A Cass Lake man escaped serious injury after his semi-trailer was broadsided by a train at an intersection with U.S. Highway 2 on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 1998 Mack 600 Super driven by Thomas Gregerson, 43, of Cass Lake, was northbound on Pike Bay Loop and approaching the intersection with U.S. Highway 2 at about 4 p.m. Sunday. Road conditions were icy, the patrol said, and when the truck came onto the railroad tracks, the semi was broadsided by a westbound Burlington Northern Sante Fe train.

Gregerson, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Sanford Bemidji, the patrol said. The semi was totaled. The Cass County Sheriff's Office and the Cass Lake Police Department responded to the accident.
