Email

For the second time in three seasons the Cass Lake-Bena baseball team has been crowned the conference champion.

Monday in Cass Lake the Panthers edged Blackduck 3-1 in the battle of the North and the South division champions. The victory was CL-B's 21st in as many starts this year.

"It was a very good baseball game," said CL-B coach Ken Wittner. "Blackduck brought its 'A' game and so did we."

Tyler Trosen earned the pitching victory as he allowed four hits while fanning 13. Trosen threw 91 pitches in the game and 63 of them were strikes.

Cody Bergquist was the losing pitcher for the Drakes despite yielding only seven hits.

Cass Lake-Bena scored two runs in the third when Chad Wittner walked, Nolan Goss reached on an error, Trosen singled home one run and, after Caleb Fisher was hit by a pitch, Mike Masten delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Panthers added an insurance tally in the fifth when Goss singled and Mike Hanson doubled him home.

"This group of seniors won the conference title as sophomores and last year finished second, one-half game out," the coach said. "Winning twice in your career is a great accomplishment."

Last Friday CL-B ended its regular season with a 47-0 win over Laporte, despite using nothing but substitutes from the second inning on.
