Cass County SHIP to award funding to schools
The Statewide Health Improvement Program of Cass County announced implementation plans in Cass County school districts for the 2010 year.
SHIP funding is provided by the State of Minnesota as part of health care reform and was granted to Cass County to work with communities, schools, worksites and health care facilities to promote change to reduce obesity and tobacco use.
Walker-Akeley-Hackensack school will participate in the program and plans to implement healthy after-school concessions and healthier options in vending machines. It also plans to begin a walking program for students, staff and the community.
SHIP funding awarded to schools will assist them in purchasing equipment, signage, promotion, training and planning for implementation. Each school is guided by a wellness committee made up of administration, school nurses, parents, students and community members.
