Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie reported that Speltz was arraigned on two counts of first-degree conspiracy to sell a controlled substance, namely crack cocaine, and two counts of first-degree sale of a controlled substance under the theory of liability for crimes of another.

According to the criminal complaint:

The sales occurred between January and April 2009 in Cass County and consisted of 10 or more grams of crack cocaine.

On Jan. 29, 2009, agents of the Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force were contacted by a confidential reliable informant (CRI) who said he could buy crack cocaine from Speltz at a residence in Cass Lake, The CRI was fitted with a listening device and furnished with money from the federal buy fund for the purchases. The CRI made several purchases totaling nearly 30 grams.

The complaint states that Speltz conspired to sell the crack with several others who have been charged with offenses related to their alleged involvement with the conspiracy.

The investigation was conducted by agents of the Headwaters Safe Trail Task Force, Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
