Carl Schnitzer, 81, of Callaway, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 in Detroit Lakes.

Carl George Schnitzer was born to Charles Schnitzer and Annie (Stanforth) Schnitzer on Sept. 21, 1926 in Detroit Lakes. He grew up in rural Detroit Lakes and attended country school in Erie Township. He helped on the family farm and worked after school for the Addison Miller Ice Company in Detroit Lakes.

Carl served in the U.S Army from 1950-52 during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the army, he returned to Detroit Lakes and worked for Addison Miller for a short time before starting a dairy farm near Callaway.

Carl married Janice Bjorgo on Nov. 15, 1959 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Callaway. He retired from the dairy farm in the late 1990s. After his retirement, he enjoyed fishing. Carl was a member of the Ogema VFW and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Callaway.

Surviving Carl are his wife, Janice Schnitzer; two sons, Kevin Schnitzer of Castroville, Texas and Glenn Schnitzer of Moorhead; two daughters, Sheila (Robert) Kiehl of Frazee and Darla (Omar) Abu-shanab of Auburn Hills, Mich.; nine grandchildren; one brother Alfred (Marlene) Schnitzer of Detroit Lakes; two sisters, Elsie (Arvid) Thompson of Barnesville and Dorothy Erickson of Detroit Lakes; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Callaway, with the Rev. Del Stohs officiating. Burial will be in Richwood Lakeside Cemetery, Richwood Township.
