Eight adventurous young paddlers are going down the Mississippi to New Orleans, raising funds for earthquake victims in Haiti. Five days into their trip, they ran into rough weather at Lake Bemidji State Park Monday evening. On Tuesday they even encountered large whitecaps. But with some help from Bemidji residents, their canoes and gear were delivered to the Mississippi River outlet on Lake Bemidji late Tuesday afternoon and their journey continued. Canoeists set out for Gulf of Mexico to raise funds for country

Last February, cousins Michael Gutschenritter of Wisconsin and Louis Gutschenritter of Georgia began planning a canoe trip from the Mississippi Headwaters at Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.

"We got to talking about a cool adventure," Michael said. "The Mississippi came up and decided we shouldn't do it for selfish reasons."
