Candidates file for vacant seat on Beltrami County Board

As of Monday, five candidates have filed to run for the Beltrami County Board of Commissioners District 3 seat left vacant by the July 21 death of Commissioner Jim Heltzer. Filing closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 19.

A primary will be held Sept. 13 with the top two vote getters advancing to the general election Nov. 8.

E Richard Anderson and his wife, Vange, have been married for 35 years and had five children and have five grandchildren. The live and farm in Lammers Township on the farm his parents and siblings moved to 63 years ago. He has served as a township officer for 39 years, is a member of his church council and runs a 280-acre beef farm with his family and sister. He retired as principal of Bemidji High School in2009 after working in education for more than 39 years.

E Steven Johnson and his wife, Elaine, have been married for 37 years and have five children and four grandchildren. He owns and operated Steve's Body Shop on Lake Avenue South. He served on the Bemidji School Board for eight years, Bemidji Youth Hockey Association Board for 10 years and The Ralph Gracie Post American Legion Executive Board for five years. He said he has lived in District 3 all his life.

E David Myers and his wife of 20 years, Sally, had six children and have five grandchildren. They have live in the Bemidji area for eight years. He is principal of the Heartland Christian Academy and pastor of Ridgewood Baptist Church. He also ran for state representative for District 4A. He is currently working on his doctorate at Luther Rice Seminary .

E Larry Pahl, 507 Jefferson Ave. N.W., lives in Bemidji Township. He worked for the Beltrami County Jail for three years.

E Scott Winger, a Bemidji County Sheriff's sergeant who lives in Pinewood, has more than 20 years as a patrol sergeant and has served on the Beltrami County Budget Committee, Northwest Indian OIC and was Director of the Adult Day Services Board. He is past president of the Bemidji Shrine Club and Headwaters Fraternal Order of Police.

District 3 includes the townships of Alaska, Bemidji, Buzzle, Durand, Grant Valley, Hagali, Jones, Lammers, Liberty, Maple Ridge, Nebish, O'Brien and Roosevelt and the cities of Solway and Wilton.
