Burning wood pile ignites grass field
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

BEMIDJI — A permit-sanctioned burning of a wood pile spread to a grass field Monday afternoon.

Crews from the Bemidji Fire Department were called to the fire, near the intersection of Little Norway Avenue Southeast and Francis Court Southeast, just before 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Tina Johnson said she and her husband, Shawn Johnson, acquired a permit to burn the pile and were given the go-ahead from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources about 3 p.m.

The fire in the pile, sitting in a field of thick grass, quickly spread.

“It just took off on us,” Tina Johnson said. “I freaked out and called the fire department.”

Firefighters prevented the blaze from reaching a wooded area while neighbors used buckets to draw water from roadside puddles to control the blaze.

No injuries were reported.
