BSU women's hockey: Beavers blank Lindenwood 5-0
BEMIDJI — If Steve Sertich had any questions about the Bemidji State women’s hockey team’s intensity level, they were answered Friday afternoon.
Eleven players had at least one point for the Beavers (2-2-1) as they rolled to a dominating 5-0 victory over Lindenwood in the first game of their nonconference series at the Sanford Center. The teams drop the puck again at 2:07 p.m. today.
“I thought the effort was better,” the BSU head coach said. “That was one of our goals as we’re getting ready for our league. It was much better today. Anytime you win 5-0, it’s a good sign.”
Five different players scored the five BSU goals and defenseman Ivana Bilic had a pair of assists for the team’s only multi-point game.
“We played with more of a jump today,” Bilic said. “We came out ready to go. Things just seemed to click, each line was going.
“We scored five goals, and it wasn’t just one person or one line. It was spread out. We need that tomorrow.”
The Beavers scored twice in the first period, three times in the second and let up in the third for the final tally of 5-0. BSU outshot the Lions 45-14.
“We came out with a lot of energy,” said senior forward Tess Dusik, who scored the game’s first goal. “I think getting different scoring from everybody really brought our intensity up. It gave everybody the confidence in the game and a little confidence in each other.”
Dusik put the Beavers on the board early, getting a feed from Kaitlyn Tougas at the 8 minute, 33 second mark and scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal after skating into the slot covered by two Lions defenders.
“(Tougas) had it along the boards, and I just saw an opening to cut in the middle of the ice there,” Dusik said. “She hit me right where she needed to and I was able to throw it to the far net and bury it.”
Kristine Greiner also scored in the first period.
In the second frame, Stephanie Anderson, Alex Citrowske and Hanna Moher each scored to complete the rout. Anderson and Moehr’s goals were both on the power play.
Citrowske’s tally, though, was emblematic of the rest of the game. She forced a turnover and picked up the puck by the red line. She flicked it towards Lindenwood goaltender Nicole Hensley and the puck knuckled in front of her before it bounced and went in behind her.
That’s the kind of night it was for the Beavers — seemingly everything went in, no matter how weird a shot it was.
“It’s fun for them,” Sertich said. “Everybody has to chip in. Hopefully that will help build confidence for some of those kids who don’t get on the board that often.”
Lindenwood (0-6-3) changed goalies in the third period and Alexis Molotky made 10 saves. Freshman Brittni Mowat made 14 saves in her first career shutout.
“From playing them two weekends ago we knew what we needed to bring,” Bilic said. The Beavers beat Lindenwood 3-2 and tied the Lions 1-1 on Sept. 27 and 28.
“That weekend didn’t go too well, so we came out better this time.”
