BSU women's athletics golf tourney set for Friday
The Bemidji Town & Country Club will host the 27th annual First National Bank BSU Women's Athletics fundraising golf tournament Friday and more than 80 women were registered as of Tuesday.
"But there is still time to join us," said Sue Engel, one of the volunteer tournament committee members.
The event features a 5-person scramble tournament and the day's activities include 18 holes of golf with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m., rolls and coffee at 7:30 a.m., lunch, complimentary food and beverages on the course, drawings, games and an awards ceremony.
This summer marks the 12th year that First National Bank has been the underwriter and during the previous 11 years the tournament has raised $107,500 for BSU women's athletics.
While the number of participants appears to be down from last year, the support from the business community has increased. A year ago the tournament attracted 21 hole sponsors but Friday there will be at least 36.
"First National Bank is very supportive of many BSU athletic programs," Engel said. "Bemidji State was one of the first universities to offer women's sports and that was because of the forward thinking of many women."
Among that group are honorary tournament chairs Jeanette Welle, Ruth Howe and Dona May Naylor.
"This tournament is one of the ways women's athletic supporters can continue the work that Jeanette, Ruth and others started," Engel said. "Because of their efforts women athletes at Bemidji State continue to have opportunity and that opportunity adds to their complete education."
While raising money is the central theme, the tournament is designed to provide a fun experience for the participants.
"It also showcases the wonderful Bemidji Town & Country Club," Engel said. "Everybody will have a great time and everybody is welcome."
