BSU women defeat Southwest

The smiles were obvious Friday night as the Bemidji State women's basketball team snapped a 10-game losing skid by downing Southwest State 68-65 at the BSU gym.

"It feels great," said Beaver coach Mike Curfman. "I am so proud of the effort. We have been close so many times over the streak but the streak kept mounting and mounting. It was great to finish one off."

Guard Shannon Thompson, who returned to the lineup for the first time since sustaining an injury on Feb. 5, finished with 15 points to help lead the Beavers.

"It was hard sitting on the bench watching my team and knowing that I could not contribute," Thompson said. "I went all out tonight."

The Beavers shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half and led the Mustangs 30-28 at the break.

After a sluggish start to the second half, however, BSU trailed Southwest by eight points with 11:56 remaining in regulation.

Following a 3-pointer from Anna Hebrink and a pair of free throws from Morgan Lee mideay through the second half, the Beavers knotted the score at 50-50.

Neither team could open a comfortable lead in the closing 10 minutes and with 30 seconds to play Thompson converted a 3-point play on a fast break to break a 62-62 deadlock.

In the waning seconds Thompson and Lee each contributed a pair of free throws to ice the victory.

Hebrink, who celebrated her birthday Friday, led the Beavers with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. She made four of her five 3-point shots. Colleen McKay added 12 points and five boards.

"We made some plays and some good decisions at the end," said Curfman. "Hopefully we can learn from those things as well as the heartbreaks we have suffered this year."

BSU, 6-17 overall and 3-16 in the NSIC, will host Minnesota State 4 p.m. today.
