The Bemidji State volleyball team opens its season today with a pair of games in Nevada.
The Beavers will play Newman University at 3 p.m. and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Northern State at 7 p.m. at the Las Vegas Blast.
The game against Northern State will not count in the NSIC standings.
The Beavers conclude play tomorrow against Newman at 2 p.m. and Huntington at 7 p.m.
The Beavers head to Las Vegas looking to build off of its best season in four years. The Beavers finished the 2007 season 10-17 overall and 6-12 in the NSIC.
The Beavers 10 wins last season was the most since the 2004 season and the six conference wins was the most since the 2003 season.
Bemidji State returns seven players from a year ago; one senior, three juniors and three sophomores.
The Beavers return three of the four top returning hitters from the 2007 season.
Sophomore Nicole Olson led BSU at the net as she led the Beavers with 294 kills and 91 total blocks.
Junior Brie Groskreutz, who was named an NSIC player to watch this season, was fourth on the team with 209 kills and was first on the team with 455 digs in 95 games.
The 2008 squad returns one senior in Jennifer Janckila who finished the 2007 season with 86 kills and 56 blocks.
BSU brings in seven newcomers to this years squad. The Beavers will be looking for these newcomers to make an impact right away.
Probable starters for today's matches are Olson, Groskreutz, Janckila, Heather Sampson, Courtney Bitter, Allison Knude and Laura Vonasek.
