ST. LOUIS -- The Bemidji State volleyball team opened its season with a pair of matches in the Maryville University Tournament in St. Louis Friday night, losing its opener before rallying for a win in the second match.
The Beavers began the tournament with a contest against No. 17 ranked Missouri Baptist. BSU took the first game 25-22, but fell short in the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-13.
Freshman Jessica Yost led the Beavers with 11 kills in the match -- her first at the collegiate level. Junior Courtney Volkmann added 36 assists, while freshman Amanda Tronick collected 12 digs.
BSU bounced back in the second match to top tournament host Maryville 3-2. The teams traded games as Maryville won the first and third sets by scores of 25-23 and 26-24, while BSU was victorious in games two and four by scores of 25-21 and 21-12 to set up a fifth game.
The Beavers edged the Saints 15-12 to earn the victory.
Tronick led the way for BSU with 19 kills and added 12 digs. Sophomore Kayla DeJong added a team-high 23 digs in the match.
Bemidji State (1-1) will resume action in the tournament at 10 a.m. today against Maryville before finishing up the tournament with a match against St. Ambrose (Iowa) at 2 p.m.
