BSU SPORTS ROUNDUP: Tennis gets first NSIC win of 2014

SARTELL — The BSU women’s tennis team earned its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory in since April 14, 2012, Saturday, as the team posted a 1-1 record in a pair of league matches at Revolution Tennis Club in Sartell. The Beavers garnered a 7-2 decision over Southwest Minnesota State before dropping a 6-3 match to St. Cloud State.

Against SMSU the Beavers won all three doubles matches: No. 1 team Shaylin Prout and Deanie Hatch won 8-0 victory, No. 2 team Caley Westin and Mikela Kowatsch won 9-7 and No. 3 teams Justine Scheller and Nicci Hedtke won 8-6.

Prout and Hatch won their No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches to clinch the victory.

Westin and Jessica Dulz also won their singles matches for the victory.

In the second match BSU won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and Prout and Hatch won at No. 1 doubles but SCSU won all six others.

BSU returns to action Feb. 15-16 when it hosts Upper Iowa and Minnesota Duluth in its 2014 home opening weekend. The Beavers will face the Peacocks at 6 p.m. Saturday, with a 2:30 p.m. match Sunday against the Bulldogs at BSU’s Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center.

Track has six podium winners

DULUTH — The BSU track and field team posted four top six finishes at the Lake Superior Challenge in Duluth Saturday. Nicole Crummy led the team, clocking a season-best time to finish fourth in the 400-meter dash.

Crummy turned in a one minute, 5.20 second 400-meter race.

BSU 4x200-meter relay team also recorded a fourth-place finish at the meet. Nikki Anderson, Austin Eng, Kaneeshia Johnson and Chloe Miller broke the tape in 1:55.75.

In addition, Johnson recorded a long jump mark of 16 feet, 3.25 inches to claim sixth place, while Ciara Brewster took sixth in the shot put with a toss of 37-4.50.

Members of the BSU track and field team will be back action Sunday and Monday as they travel to Mankato to participate in the 2014 NSIC Multi-Event Championships.

LUTES EARNS NSIC HONORS

BEMIDJI — BSU junior Brock Lutes scored 73 points in two wins last weekend to earn Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference player of the week for the second time this season.

He scored 30 points in an 83-60 win over Minot State Friday, before posting a career-best 43 points in Saturday’s 90-77 win over University of Mary.

His 43 points ranks second in school history behind a 44-point effort from Charles Hanks against Winona State in March of 2004.
