BSU SPORTS ROUNDUP: Baseball, softball preseason polls; Tennis starts season Saturday
BURNSVILLE — The BSU baseball team was pegged to finish ninth in the 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference coaches poll.
This season coaches think the Beavers should be around that level.
Minnesota State Mankato, the 2013 NCAA Division II national runner-up and NSIC regular season and tournament champion, earned 14 of 15 first place votes and totaled 196 points.
The NSIC preseason Player of the Year was UMD’s Alex Wojciechowski, while the NSIC preseason Pitcher of the Year was Jason Hoppe of MSU.
Senior catcher Zach Braun and pitcher Miles Campbell were named BSU’s players to watch.
The Beavers will begin the season March 7-15 with a 10-game spring break trip to Tucson, Ariz. The NSIC slate is scheduled to begin on the road at Upper Iowa March 29-30 with the first home contest set for April 9 against Wayne State.
Softball picked 15th
BURNSVILLE — The BSU softball team was pegged 15th out of 16 teams in the 2014 NSIC preseason coaches’ poll.
The Beavers received 35 points in the poll after the 2013 squad finished with an 8-39 overall and 2-28 NSIC record, to rank 15th in the final conference standings.
The defending NSIC regular season co-champions and NSIC tournament champions, MSU Mankato, were the top picks in the poll along with Winona State. This marks the second year in a row that the Mavericks were atop the poll while WSU tops the poll for the fourth time since 2004.
Minot State’s Jen Dixon was named the NSIC preseason Player of the Year, while U-Mary’s senior lefty Cherlyn Trujillo was named NSIC preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Bemidji State’s player to watch was senior outfielder Nicole Dupay.
BSU begins competition Feb. 25-26, when the Beavers travel to West St. Paul to take on Valley City State, Jamestown College, Wisconsin-Superior, and Carelton College.
Tennis starts Saturday
The BSU women’s tennis team kicks off its 2014 campaign this weekend with a trip to Owatanna to take on Bethany Lutheran at 2 p.m.
The Beavers then go to Winona to take on both Winona State and St. Mary’s in a triangular meet.
BSU finished the 2012-13 season with a 1-13 overall record and a 0-12 mark in NSIC play.
This years’ team has four returners — junior Caley Westin as well as sophomores Anna Buck, Jessica Dulz and Nicci Hedtke — and five newcomers.
