Baseball team drops pair

MINNEAPOLIS – The Bemidji State baseball team went 0-2 to begin the 2013 season with a pair of losses to Northern State in a nonconference doubleheader at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis Friday afternoon.

BSU fell 4-2 in game one and 7-2 in game two in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Metrodome Baseball Classic.

In the first game, the Beavers scored two runs in the first inning of game one, but failed to post another run the rest of the way.

Junior Zach Braun plated senior outfielder Trevor Purvis with a single, then senior Jaryd Marks followed with a double that scored Braun for a 2-0 Beaver lead.

Senior lefty Phil Bray started and threw four strong innings before allowing four unearned runs in the fifth, as NSU posted a four-run inning to own the 4-2 lead. The Wolves scored all the runs on two outs and were unearned due to a Beaver error on the second batter of the inning.

Game two was all Northern State until BSU avoided the shutout with two runs in the seventh. The Wolves scored one in the first, before tacking on five runs in the second on five hits, knocking out the Beaver starter senior Ryan Anderson.

BSU failed to produce a hit until the fifth inning, getting the hit off the bat of sophomore Cole Bjorge.

Back-to-back walks in the top of the seventh set up a two run inning for BSU.

Senior Logan Kalis drew a lead-off walk, then sophomore Steven Prichard replaced him on the base paths and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Senior third baseman Matt Ellinghuysen also walked and would cross the plate on a senior Lewis Baumann single to right.

The Beavers continue the NSIC Metrodome Classic today with a nonconference doubleheader against Sioux Falls beginning at 6 a.m.
