BSU ROUNDUP: Beavers volleyball earns first NSIC win
FAYETTE, Iowa — The Bemidji State volleyball team earned its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win Saturday, defeating Upper Iowa in five sets (25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 16-14).
Freshman Jessica Yost posted a career-high 21 kills and 13 digs to lead the team. The 21 kills by Yost was the highest total by a Beavers’ player this season.
Also notable for BSU, junior setter Courtney Volkmann achieved her fifth double-double of the season with 45 assists and 10 digs while sophomore libero Kayla DeJong led the team with 24 digs.
BSU improves to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC. BSU won four games last season.
BSU returns home to face Minnesota State Mankato Friday at 7 p.m.
Soccer falls in OT
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The BSU soccer team scored first and was within a minute of earning a 1-1 draw at Augustana Saturday, but Stephanie Stephens found the back of the net with just 52 seconds remaining in overtime to steal the victory for the Vikings.
The loss drops the Beavers to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, while AC improved to 6-1 on the season with a 4-0 mark in league action.
After a scoreless first half, freshman Sarah Stram scored BSU’s first goal in the 73rd minute.
The Vikings responded with an equalizer less than four minute later. Maren Werth buried a header off Taylor Brownrigg’s corner kick in the 77th minute of play.
The teams played 1-1 soccer to the end of regulation and through the first nine minutes of the 10-minute overtime frame, but AC caught a break when Katie Hurd found Stephens with a pass in the 100th minute. Stephens deposited the game-winner into in the lower left corner of the goal.
Bemidji State continues its road trip with a trip to Wayne, Neb., today to take on Wayne State.
