BSU hockey team opens 2012-13 season against Lake Superior State
BEMIDJI - The Bemidji State men's hockey team will have 18 regular season home games next winter and will participate in a holiday tournament at Dartmouth.
In addition to the Beavers' 28-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association slate, BSU has six nonconference contests which include home series against Lake Superior State and Western Michigan as well as games against the University of Massachusetts and either Dartmouth or New Hampshire in the Ledyard National Bank Classic.
"With a schedule primarily made up of conference games, in the WCHA there isn't a lot of room for variety from year to year but your pod changes, that's the thing you have to look at," said BSU coach Tom Serratore.
"Year in and year out, success in the WCHA is often predicated on the success you have against teams in your pod. Next year we have Michigan Tech, Nebraska-Omaha and Minnesota Duluth in our pod and will play them each four times," Serratore, who is entering his 12th season at the helm of the BSU program, said. "All three could be challenging for home ice, so it will be very challenging for us."
Serratore is pleased with the non-conference schedule.
"We rekindle a rivalry with Lake Superior State from the old NAIA days and are playing Western Michigan, another team that made the NCAA tournament last year," Serratore said.
In addition, the team will compete in a tournament hosted by Dartmouth during the semester break.
"It's always nice to play for something and that particular weekend we will be playing for a trophy. It's also nice to get a little bit of the Hockey East-ECAC flavor and we open the tournament with UMass-Amherst and could play New Hampshire, a team we've never faced," Serratore said.
"We finish the season with Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota and Minnesota. All three teams were in the NCAA tournament this year and at least made the round of eight and Minnesota was a Frozen Four team," Serratore added. "As a fan that is exciting."
The Beavers open the campaign Oct. 7 with a home exhibition against Manitoba.
The official opener is Oct. 19-20 when Lake Superior State comes to the Sanford Center.
BSU begins its WCHA schedule Oct. 26-27 at Nebraska-Omaha. The road trip marks the first of two, four-game road trips as the Beavers sandwich an off weekend with a trip to Colorado Springs to meet Colorado College Nov. 9-10.
The Beavers return home Nov. 16-17 and host Michigan Tech.
The pre-holiday slate includes a trip to UMD Dec. 7-8 and a home series Dec. 14-15 against Denver.
The 2012 portion of the campaign concludes Dec. 30-31 at a tournament held in Hanover, N.H. Bemidji State will battle U-Mass in its opener and then face either Dartmouth or New Hampshire.
BSU begins 2013 with a home series against Western Michigan (Jan. 4-5) and, after an off week, return to WCHA play with a trip to Houghton, Mich. and a home series with Nebraska-Omaha.
February opens with a home series against St. Cloud (Feb. 1-2) and during the next two weekends the Beavers will visit Wisconsin and Duluth.
The stretch run begins March 1-2 with a trip to UND and the regular season ends at home March 8-9 against Minnesota.
The 2012-13 men's hockey season ticket process is already underway. The deadline for current season ticket holders to renew their current tickets for the upcoming season is June 1. Potential and current season ticket holders will have an opportunity to get inside the Sanford Center and purchase seats with a vantage point they like during Select-a-Seat Night 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 19.
