BSU football roundup: Training camp starts Aug. 10
BEMIDJI - Football season is right around the corner.
Aug. 10 is the first day of official practice for the Bemidji State squad, and nearly 110 athletes are expected to report to BSU that day, when they'll move in and check equipment for the upcoming season.
On-field instruction won't officially begin until Aug. 11, which begins a nonstop 21 days of practice before the home opener Aug. 31.
The Beavers kick off their 2012 campaign against Upper Iowa - a Friday. They'll play under the lights at Chet Anderson Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
Pulkinen named to award watch list
Junior kicker Zach Pulkinen has been placed on the "Watch List" for the Fred Mitchell Award.
The award recognizes collegiate place kickers for their excellence on the football field and in the community.
The "Watch List" includes kickers from more than 750 eligible colleges. Pulkinen was one of 44 on the list and one of just 11 from Division II.
Pulkinen assumed field goal and extra point kicking duties, while continuing kickoff responsibilities in 2011. He played in 10 games and totaled 3,476 yards in 54 kickoffs to average 64.4 yards per kick and posted 12 touchbacks with zero kicks out of bounds (all career-highs). He was 6-for-11 in field goal attempts for a 54.5 percentage with a long of 38 yards.
