Adam Holter and Kyle Fodness defeated Gunnar Askegaard and Trent Anderson 7-5, 6-4 at first doubles Monday, but the Bemidji High School boys tennis team couldn't muster any other victories as the Lumberjacks dropped a 6-1 decision at Brainerd.
Despite earning only one win BHS gave Brainerd, which is considered one of the top teams in the section, all it could handle as two of the individual matches were extended to three sets and another could have gone either way despite going only two sets.
"We lost 6-1 but lost two matches in three sets and another that went to a tie- breaker in the second set," said BHS coach Mark Fodness. "We were very competitive with Brainerd. In other meets this year we had success closing out those three-setters, but Monday we didn't. Brainerd has a good lineup and we were close to turning three matches that would have made a difference."
Bemidji prevailed at first doubles as Holter and Fodness outgunned their Brainerd opponents.
"Adam and Kyle played a very good match against a very good opponent," Fodness said.
"That was an important win for them because we only play Brainerd once this year and this win will have an impact on the section seeding."
At second doubles Craig Lindseth and Jack Boyer fell 6-3, 6-2 but at third doubles the Lumberjacks lost one of those matches that went three sets. Tim Paulus and Zach Hewitt took the first set 7-5 but Brainerd recovered to claim the next two, 6-1 and 6-3.
In singles action Levi Rickert dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision and Alex Hess lost 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Matt Hokanson was a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victim at third singles and Noah Holter fell 6-3, 6-3 at fourth.
"We still have much to work on but Monday we saw some positives," Fodness said.
Weather permitting the Lumberjacks will return to action Thursday at East Grand Forks.
