Brain injury leaves UND crash victim in a coma
A UND employee is in a coma after suffering a "major injury" to his brain last week when he was hit by a car on campus, according to a website maintained by his family.
Loran Carl was in critical condition Monday in Altru Hospital's intensive care unit, a nursing supervisor said.
Carl, an employee in the Facilities Building's carpet shop, was walking across Campus Road on Wednesday morning when he was struck by a car driven by a 22-year-old UND student.
The impact left Carl, 73, with a broken leg, nose and ribs, along with three fractured vertebrae in his neck and multiple skull fractures, according to his CaringBridge site.
A doctor has told the family that Carl's recovery "will be extremely long and difficult," an entry on the site says.
No one has been cited in the crash, which is still under investigation.
UND police have said the driver was heading east into the sun, which may have been a factor in the crash.
