BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji boys tennis team continued its dominance of the doubles matches Tuesday as the Lumberjacks posted a 6-0 record in doubles play in a triangular with Thief River Falls and Moorhead at the BSU Gillett Recreation Center.

In the meet against the Prowlers BHS also was able to claim a singles victory and the combined result was a 4-3 win. Against Moorhead, however, the Lumberjacks dropped all four singles battles and fell 4-3 to the Spuds.

The latter result probably assured Moorhead of the sub-section’s top seed when the postseason begins next week. Bemidji, which suffered its first loss after opening the spring with eight victories, will host Brainerd at 4 p.m. today and that winner is expected to earn the second seed in the sub-section playoffs.

“On Tuesday we played the two best teams we’ve seen so far this spring and we expected the matches to be very close,” said BHS coach Mark Fodness.

In Tuesday’s first contest the Lumberjacks turned their three doubles triumphs and Matt Hokanson’s win at first singles into a 4-3 win over the Prowlers.

Hokanson won his match 6-2, 6-4. Teammate Spencer Konecne came close to winning at fourth singles as he extended his match to three sets before falling 3-6, 6-2, (10-7).

In the other singles matches Robert Treuer fell 6-1, 6-2 at second and Evan White dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at third.

Bemidji’s first doubles tandem of Gabe Heifort and Noah Holter started the Jacks on their way as the duo spilled Isaac Duergsten and Nick Onkka 6-4, 6-4.

Kole Pankow and Sam Howard posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at second doubles and the sweep was completed when Garrett Atteberry and Rocky Copiskey outgunned Carter Onkka and Michael Magnuson 6-3, 3-6, (10-5) at third doubles.

“Thief River is very solid and is ranked in the top 10 in the state Class A poll,” Fodness said. “We had to battle to get a win. We had a strong doubles lineup and all three teams came through with key victories.

“We played well throughout the singles lineup and the match was tied 3-3 when Matt came up with a huge win at first singles to get our final point.”

Pankow and Howard moved to first doubles against Moorhead and they posted a 6-2, 7-5 triumph. White and Atteberry teamed at second doubles and prevailed 6-0, 6-4. At third doubles Copiskey and Konecne were extended to three sets before outlasting their opponents 6-4, 3-6, (10-5).

Moorhead was able to dictate play in the singles matches, however, as the Spuds won each in straight sets and didn’t drop more than two games in any match.

Hokanson, Holter, Treuer and Heifort handled the singles duties.

“Moorhead probably has the strongest singles lineup in the section,” Fodness said. “Our three doubles teams came up with the wins we needed but we just couldn’t find another win in singles.

“Overall, I thought we played very well Tuesday and we have another big home meet Wednesday against Brainerd,” the coach added.

After hosting Brainerd the Lumberjacks will continue their busy week when they visit Grand Rapids Thursday and head to Park Rapids on Friday to tangle with the host team and Fergus Falls.
