BOYS SOCCER: Spuds come back to top Lumberjacks 2-1
MOORHEAD — Bemidji gave up two second-half goals amid miserable rainy and muddy conditions and fell to the No. 10-ranked Spuds 2-1 Friday night.
“The field conditions were pretty poor,” BHS heads coach Rick Toward said. “Especially in the second half when the wind and rain picked up.”
Moorhead’s Noah Yak scored the game-winning-goal in the 74th minute of the game, beating BHS goalie Matt Bitter.
Toward said Bitter came out to play the ball but slipped due to the rain and mud. It’s a play that Bitter would normally have made in ideal field conditions.
“Not to make any excuses for us, since it affected both teams,” Toward said. “The weather just made it very difficult for us.”
Will Borgen scored Moorhead’s other goal just three minutes into the second half, equalizing the game at 1-1.
Leo Spry had gotten the Lumberjacks on the board early with a score in the fourth minute of the game; Louis Iaquinto had the assist.
Bitter made 11 saves for the Lumberjacks on 13 shots while Moorhead’s Josh Noenning had two saves on three shots.
Toward said the Spuds (10-3-3) may have had more shots on goal than the Lumberjacks but most of them were far out.
“We limited their shots and didn’t let them take a lot of good ones,” he said. “Really, we both had one or two good scoring chances. They just converted on more of them.
“To play that well against the No. 10 team in Class 2A, I’m very happy with how we played.”
Bemidji (5-7-3) returns home for one final time, they’ll take on Hillcrest Monday afternoon at the Bemidji Middle School pitch.
