BOYS SOCCER: Second half sparks Bemidji to 4-1 win over Hibbing
HIBBING — Alex Schussman had three assists as the Bemidji boys soccer team overcame a slow start to topple Hibbing 4-1.
The Lumberjacks (3-4-2) led 1-0 at halftime but according to head coach Rick Toward weren’t playing well.
“We just came out flat,” Toward said. “We got that first goal to take the lead but we needed more urgency.”
A passionate halftime peptalk fixed that.
Louis Iaquinto scored with an assist from Schussman just two minute in and the Jacks took a 2-0 lead.
Later in the second half Schussman found Payton Christofferson at the 59:16 mark. Christofferson deflected the ball in and made it 3-0.
Schussman had an assist on the game’s first goal, scored by Leo Spry at the 26:16 mark of the first half.
Spry scored the fourth goal with a minute left; Gunnar Nelson had the assist.
Hibbing’s Tanner Nowak scored on a penalty kick with seven seconds left to give the Bluejackets (2-5-1) their lone goal.
“It’s nice to see us get back on the winning track again,” Toward said. Prior to Tuesday’s loss against St. Cloud Cathedral the Lumberjacks had been on a four-game unbeaten streak.
BHS returns to action this Saturday, hosting Brainerd at 2 p.m.
