BEMIDJI -- Goals by Joel Johannsen and Leo Spry provided a 2-0 lead 12 minutes into Tuesday's action but Grand Rapids scored the game's final two goals and the teams settled for a 2-2 overtime draw at the Bemidji Middle School pitch.

Tuesday's game was Bemidji's home debut and the Lumberjacks improved to 0-3-1.

"We would have preferred to win the game but I'm not disappointed with the tie," said BHS coach Rick Toward. "We're a very young team and we ran out of gas. But the effort was there and I thought we defended our home field very well."

The Lumberjacks came out of the gate flying and less than seven minutes into the action Bemidji struck when Alex Schussman fed Johannsen and the senior midfielder beat Thunderhawks goalie Joseph Burt.

Less than five minutes later Schussman's shot bounced off traffic and Spry was in position in front of the net to bang the loose ball by Burt.

As the second half progressed, however, the visitors started to take control. The pressure finally paid dividends 32 minutes into the first half when Marcus Frostholm beat BHS netminder Bruno Cheney from close range.

"I thought we let Grand Rapids in the door when it scored in the first half," Toward said.

The second half followed a similar script as BHS played well early in the stanza but Grand Rapids owned an edge later in the period.

The visitors notched the equalizer at the 57-minute mark when Ben Ziemski took a corner kick and Jens Pearson was in position to swat it home.

Neither team found the net during the final 23 minutes of regulation nor in the 10 minutes of overtime.

"Because we're such a young team we're still trying to figure things out," Toward said. "And I saw many nice things from our younger kids.

"We're a work in progress but it's coming," the coach added.

The Lumberjacks return to action Thursday when they travel to East Grand Forks. Their next home game will be Monday against Detroit Lakes.
