BOYS SOCCER: BHS falls at Cathedral
ST. CLOUD -- The Bemidji High School boys soccer team always has trouble against St. Cloud Cathedral.
On Tuesday night the Lumberjacks hung with the Crusaders but gave up a few key goals that led to a 3-1 loss to their section nemesis.
"We played pretty well for most of the game," BHS head coach Rick Toward said. "We limited their chances and used the gameplan we had planned on using.
"But we had a few breakdowns and couldn't recover."
The Lumberjacks (2-4-2) trailed 1-0 at halftime following a goal from David Verwijs at the 29:39 mark of the game; the goal was scored off a free kick setpiece.
"The wind was pretty strong and we were playing into it for the first half," Toward said. "So we played pretty well in the first half."
But a few defensive breakdowns in the 64th minute led to two more Cathedral goals.
Alex Peterson scored the first at the 64:00 mark, beating BHS keeper Matt Bitter with a beautiful long strike that was difficult to defend.
A minute and a half later, one of the Lumberjacks fouled Peterson in the penalty area. He received a penalty kick and nailed it.
Just like that the Crusaders (7-1-1) led 3-0.
The Lumberjacks finally got on the board at the 71 minute mark with a goal by Louis Iaquinto.
"We played a lot better at the end of the game but it was too little too late," Toward said. "That middle section of the second half was the killer."
Bitter made three saves on six shots for the Lumberjacks while Cathedral keeper Phil Ruegemer made one save on two shots.
The Lumberjacks return to the pitch Thursday, traveling to Hibbing for a nonconference matchup.
