ST. CLOUD – Bemidji’s Isak Sommer scored just three minutes into the Lumberjacks’ Section 8A championship soccer game at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.

Unfortunately for the Lumberjacks, St. Cloud Cathedral found late momentum.

The Crusaders scored the next three goals of the game and came away with a 3-1 victory, denying the Lumberjacks their first-ever trip to the state tournament.

Sommer’s goal came off a free kick that beat the Crusaders keeper, but Bemidji (13-3-2) couldn’t hold on to that lead.

Cathedral (17-0-2) got the equalizer when Alex Peterson beat BHS goalkeeper Connor McNallan with just six minutes left in the first half.

The teams went into halftime tied, but the Crusaders didn’t waste time taking the lead.

Peterson scored just four minutes into the second half for his second goal.

That would turn out to be the game winner, but Cathedral added some insurance with 25:56 to go. Charlie Schuweiler scored Cathedral’s third goal to help punch their ticket to state.

The Jacks attacked well in the final 20 minutes of the game but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Cathedral will play in the state tournament starting next weekend in the Twin Cities. The state title game is scheduled for Nov. 1 at the Metrodome.
