Boys soccer: Bemidji advances to section semifinals
DETROIT LAKES — Alex Schussman scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Bemidji boys soccer team to a 2-1 win Saturday at Detroit Lakes in the Section 8A quarterfinals.
Bemidji entered the game seeded third in the North Sub-Section while Detroit Lakes was ranked second.
After a scoreless first half Schussman sent a free kick from 30 yards toward the Detroit Lakes net and Leo Spry headed it past goalie Connor Johnson.
The goal came at the 50:58 mark and 10 seconds later Noah Kovach hit Schussman with a lead pass and Schussman zipped it into the net.
The home team drew within 2-1 with 14 minutes to play but Jacks goalie Matt Bitter and the defense were able to keep the Lakers off the board the rest of the way.
In two previous games against Detroit Lakes this fall the Jacks lost 3-1 and tied 3-3.
“But we’re a better team now than we were then,” said Bemidji coach Rick Toward. “We started with young players in new positions but now they are getting used to those positions and to playing together.”
Bemidji (7-8-3) will travel to Sartell (13-2-2) for Tuesday’s semifinal. Sartell is the No. 1 seed from the South Sub-Section and advanced with a 6-1 Saturday win over Little Falls.
On Sept.28 Sartell nipped the Jacks 1-0 in Bemidji.
