Boys hockey: Copiskey's hat trick leads Bemidji past St. Cloud Tech
ST. CLOUD — Rocky Copiskey notched a hat trick and Michael Forseth and Jack Johnson each dished a pair of assists to lead the Bemidji boys hockey team to a 5-1 victory Saturday at St. Cloud Tech.
“We played a solid game,” said BHS coach Wade Chiodo whose team improved to 10-11-1. “There was a 5-minute stretch in the second period when we got out of our game a little but other than that we played solid in all three zones. At this time of the season you want to play a complete game in all three zones and we did that. We pretty much controlled the play and the puck possession.”
That puck possession paid dividends in the final minutes of the first period as the Lumberjacks scored with four minutes to play in the stanza and again with six seconds to go.Copiskey opened the scoring at the 12:30 mark while BHS was on the power play. Forseth instigated the play as he streaked to the side, made a power move to the net and zipped a pass to Copiskey who didn’t miss.Nick Leitner delivered a bit hit to St. Cloud Tech when he scored in the final six seconds courtesy of assists by Brett Hartje and Cole Hartje. The home team scored the only goal of the second period but Copiskey answered 2:38 in the third period when he banged home the rebound of Jake Leitner’s shot. Johnson also drew an assist.Noah Burns upped Bemidji’s cushion to 4-1 a minute later when he converted Johnson’s feed.Copiskey completed his hat trick at 6:17 when he tipped home Sam Bruestle’s shot from the blue line.“Rocky scored all three of his goals in different ways,” Chiodo said. “As a team we’ve been creating opportunities in our recent games and Saturday the kids were rewarded for their hard work.“This was a big win and it was a big section win,” Chiodo added.Gabe Heifort tended Bemidji’s net and stopped 21 shots. The Lumberjacks’ offense generated 39 shots.BHS will host Brainerd 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in another key section battle.
