MONTICELLO – At some point this winter the Bemidji High School boys hockey team was going to have a break-out period which would lead to a one-sided victory.
That period came Friday at Monticello as the Lumberjacks scored six times in the final 17 minutes and buried the Moose 9-1.
The home team held an 8-4 lead in shots on goal during the opening stanza but the score was tied 1-1 heading into the second period.
BHS opened the scoring four minutes into the action when Matt Serratore scored unassisted but the Moose answered six minutes later.
The Lumberjacks began to take charge in the middle session, however, as they outshot Monticello 9-8 and outscored the hosts 2-0.
Ben Christopher broke the tie with a power play tally at 14:51 and 13 seconds later Mike Sveine upped the cushion to 3-1.
Brett Isensee and Mike Sauer assisted on Christopher’s goal while Sam Starkey had a hand on Sveine’s marker.
BHS continued to dominate in the third period, outshooting Monticello 20-2 and scoring six times in a 9-minute span.
Isensee notched the first two, scoring at 6:52 and again 11 seconds later. Serratore collected his second of the night at 8:41 on the power play and Tanner Boes scored at 9:45, also while the Moose were killing a penalty.
Brett Hartje upped the lead to 8-1 at the 14:38 mark and Serratore completed his hat trick with two seconds to play.
Bemidji goalie Gabe Heifort made 16 saves while a pair of Monticello goalies combined for only 15 saves on 24 shots.
Friday’s win upped Bemidji’s record to 6-10-1 but the Lumberjacks will have little time to celebrate the victory as they host Hermantown 6 p.m. today at the Sanford Center.
