BOYS HOCKEY: Bemidji, Sartell battle to 4-4 tie

SARTELL – A pair of 5-minute major penalties, one for a check from behind and the other for a boarding infraction, proved costly to the Bemidji High School boys hockey team as the Lumberjacks had to settle for a 4-4 tie Saturday with Sartell.

The home team scored a goal on each extended power play and those tallies countered Bemidji’s territorial dominance.

“I thought we outplayed Sartell but the two 5-minute majors we had gave them extra chances,” said BHS coach Wade Chiodo. “We controlled play when it was 5-on-5 but the difference was those two majors.”

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring when Matt Serratore connected midway through the first period but the home team countered five minutes later when Andrew Lindemeier scored on the power play.

Bemidji’s Mike Forseth and Mike Sauer sandwiched a pair of goals between two Sartell tallies in the middle period.

Early in the third stanza Noah Burns gave BHS a 4-3 lead but, once again, Sartell answered when it scored with the man advantage courtesy of the major penalty.

Neither team scored in the overtime.

Grant Tharaldson, who tended Bemidji’s goal in the third period and the extra session, stopped 10 Sartell shots in the overtime. Bemidji, 4-8-1, hosts Crookston Tuesday at the Sanford Center.
