BOYS HOCKEY: Bemidji falls to Cloquet in Denfeld semifinals
DULUTH — After a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Buffalo in Thursday’s quarterfinals at the Duluth Denfield Heritage Classic, the Bemidji High School boys hockey team couldn’t carry that momentum into Friday’s semifinals.
Cloquet-Esko-Carlton shut out Bemidji 3-0 to advance to Saturday’s championship game.
“We did not play very well,” BHS head coach Wade Chiodo said of his team’s 3-0 loss. “We just didn’t have a good game. That’s the bottom line.”
Bemidji (4-6-0) will take on either Rosemount or hosts Denfeld in this afternoon’s 3 p.m. third-place game. Cloquet (4-6-1) will play the winner in the 5 p.m. championship game.
Cloquet scored twice in the first period in a span of less than a minute to take an early 2-0 lead. Derek Bloom scored at the 10 minute, 24 second mark and Koby Bender scored again at 10:59 and Cloquet took a 2-0 lead into the break.
Hunter Roberts added the third and final goal at the 12:13 mark of the second period.
“We’ve got to start playing with more urgency,” Chiodo said. “We came slow out of the gate after that overtime game yesterday and never recovered.”
Cloquet outshot Bemidji 32-17; Grant Theraldson made 29 saves for BHS while Zach Strom got a shutout for Cloquet.
