The Lumberjacks took seventh place at the Duluth Heritage Holiday Classic Saturday morning with a 1-0 win over Detroit Lakes.

“We got the W, so we’re going in a good direction, but we have got to score more goals,” BHS head coach Wade Chiodo said. “We gave up only three goals in this tournament and lost two games.”

Indeed, the Lumberjacks’ defense, anchored by Gabe Heifort and Grant Tharaldson in goal, was stout. But the Lumberjacks lost their tournament opener to Owatonna 2-1 in overtime Thursday before being shut out by Buffalo 1-0 Friday.

Saturday, the Lumberjacks (3-8-0) only scored one goal but generally dominated Detroit Lakes (4-6).

The Lumberjacks outshot the Lakers 11-1 in the first period but couldn’t find the net.

They made up for that in the second period, when Matt Serratore scored on a power play at the 2:33 mark to put the Jacks up 1-0.

Mike Sauer got the assist on the play.

The Lumberjacks couldn’t score again, but Heifort stonewalled the Lakers, stopping all 16 shots to earn the shutout.

In all, BHS outshot Detroit Lakes 32-16.

The Lumberjacks return to action Thursday when they travel to River Lakes.
