BEMIDJI — The immediate postseason goal of the Bemidji boys golf team is to finish in the top six after the first round of the section meet and advance to the tournament’s second 18 holes.

Lumberjacks coach Seth Knudson predicts that a score around 320 will be required and, after three recent rounds, it appears that the Lumberjacks have some work to do.

During Monday’s home tournament at the Bemidji Town and Country Club, BHS finished fifth in the 18-team field with a score of 343. At the 36-hole tournament in Fergus Falls on Friday and Saturday Bemidji had rounds in the low-340s and Knudson believes that at least 20 shots will have to be trimmed off the team score if the Jacks are to accomplish their section goal.

“We didn’t improve much on Monday as a team and to make the top six at sections we’ll have to play better,” Knudson said. “To do that we’ll have to have a couple of kids shoot in the 70s and have the other kids in the 80s.

“We’re not there yet but we have some kids who could do it.”

On Monday the lone Lumberjack to shoot in the 70s was Matt Gregg who shot 41-38-79 at the 36-36-72 BT-CC layout. Sam Bruestle finished 41-43-84 and Leo Spry ended 44-43-87.

Isaac. Brandon Reynolds finished 48-45-93, Ben Christopher 53-43-96 and Isaac Bleser 48-49-97.

Staples-Motley was the team champion as the Cardinals shot 323.

“Matt had a good round,” Knudson said of Gregg’s 79. “He made the turn with a birdie on No. 9 and an eagle on No. 10.

“But as a team we have plenty of work to do,” the coach continued. “Last year we had four individuals make it to the second day of the section tournament and we should have some individuals do that again this year. But our goal is to play on the second day as a team and to do that we will have to improve.”
