Boys basketball: Red Lake, WHA advance to sub-section title game

THIEF RIVER FALLS — Red Lake stopped Northome-Kelliher 78-70 and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley escaped Fosston 74-68 in overtime Saturday in the East Sub-Section 8A boys basketball playoffs at the REA in Thief River Falls.

Saturday’s results sets up Tuesday’s sub-section championship game against the top two seeds. WHA, the defending Section 8A champion and No. 1 seed, will take a 23-4 record into Tuesday’s contest while second-ranked Red Lake is 21-7.

In Saturday’s West Sub-Section semifinals, top-ranked Northern Freeze trimmed Kittson County 49-44 and No. 3 Warren-Alvarado-Oslo upset second-rated Fertile-Beltrami 64-60.

Tuesday’s first game at the REA will pit Northern Freeze against WAO at 6 p.m. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Red Lake will meet in the 7:45 p.m. contest.

Tuesday’s winners will return to the REA on Friday in the section championship game. That battle is scheduled for 7 p.m.
