Boys basketball: Red Lake draws Maranatha Christian in state quarterfinals
RED LAKE -- The Red Lake boys basketball team will begin its state tournament experience 3 p.m. Thursday against Maranatha Christian Academy in the quarterfinal round of the Class A event at William’s Arena on the University of Minnesota campus.
The Warriors, fresh off Friday’s 70-67 victory over Northern Freeze in the Section 8A championship game, will take a 23-7 record into Thursday’s contest. Maranatha (25-3) slipped past Minneapolis North 67-65 in the Section 5A title game and was given the second seed in the Class A state field.
Red Lake is not ranked among the top five.
Thursday’s upper-bracket quarterfinal games at Williams Arena find No. 1 rated Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (28-1) meeting unranked Park Christian (22-9) at 11 a.m. and fourth-seeded Canby (25-4) squaring off against No. 5 Fond du Lac (23-3) at 1 p.m.
Following the Red Lake-Maranatha game, No. 3 Rushford-Peterson (29-1) will tangle with unranked Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (21-7) at 5 p.m.
Thursday’s winners will advance to the Class A semifinals which will be played at noon and 2 p.m. Friday at Target Center. Thursday’s losers will be eliminated.
The championship game is scheduled for noon Saturday at the Target Center and the third-place contest will be played at 10 a.m. Saturday at Concordia-St. Paul.
