Lumberjacks head coach Dan Ninham said his team was not ready for the level of competition provided by the Lakers.

“Our lack of varsity experience was a major factor tonight,” Ninham said. “We were not quite ready for this level of competition.”

Detroit Lakes grabbed an early lead and never looked back. By halftime, the lead was 51-29.

“We did not hold on to the ball or play defense well,” Ninham said. “Things got out of our control very quickly.”

A specific aspect Ninham feels his team could have handled better is facing pressure defense.

“We knew we were going to be pressured. Most teams are probably going to play a press defense against us,” Ninham said. “We need to be more prepared.”

A positive in the defeat, was the increased minutes for the young Lumberjacks team. Sophomore Josh Cervenka led the team with 13 points.

“Our underclassmen got some good minutes tonight,” Ninham said. “Josh led the team in scoring, so that was good to see.”

Ryan Cihak, of the Lakers, led all scorers with 19 points.

Bemidji (0-1) will look to improve Tuesday when it will travel to take on Thief River Falls.

“We need to play better defense,” Ninham said of Tuesday’s contest. “We need to be more assertive on offense, as well. Basically, we need to execute all aspects of the game better than we did tonight.”
