“We played a good first half but Brainerd played a little better,” said BHS assistant coach Travis Peterson. “We had only three turnovers in the first half but still trailed 34-26 at the break.”

In the second half BHS and Brainerd played to a 41-41 stalemate but the Jacks couldn’t overcome the first-half deficit.

The Warriors won the game from the free throw line as they converted 33 of 46 charity tosses. The Jacks went to the line only 12 times and made seven.

“We had to foul at the end and Brainerd made the free throws,” Peterson said. “But, overall, this was our best total effort of the year. We definitely are making progress.”

Joe Strong paced Bemidji’s offense with 24 points, converting eight 3-point baskets. Collin Rutledge added 14 and Jaylen Ingalls 13.

The Jacks (1-8) host East Grand Forks Thursday. The Green Wave currently is rated No. 1 in the state Class 2A rankings.
