Boys basketball: Bemidji ends losing streak with victory over Cristo Rey

BEMIDJI — Joe Strong drained five shots from 3-point land and scored 27 points to lead the Bemidji boys basketball team to a 71-57 victory over Cristo Rey Jesuit Friday at the BHS gym.

Friday’s win snapped an eight-game losing streak and gave the Jacks a 2-12 record. Bemidji will shoot for its second straight victory at 2 p.m. today when it hosts Red Lake in the final game of the home tournament.

Red Lake dropped Friday’s opener 78-77 to Fond du Lac.

Bemidji and Cristo Rey both struggled offensively early in the game but late in the opening half the Lumberjacks found their attack. Trailing 21-14 with about six minutes to play in the stanza BHS outscored the Pumas 17-6 the rest of the half and owned a 31-27 lead at intermission.

Strong had 10 points at the break and James Hendricks, who drained a trio of 3-pointers in the period, had 10.

The visitors took a temporary 33-32 lead early in the second half but the Lumberjacks answered with 15 consecutive points. The spurt included a pair of long-distance bombs by Strong, seven points by Collin Rutledge and another 3-pointer by Hendricks.

The surge gave BHS a 47-33 advantage and the Pumas never drew within single digits again.

Rutledge finished with 18 points and Hendricks had 14.
