The "Guide to the North Country National Scenic Trail in Minnesota" has recently been released by Big Earth Publishing and Trails Book, offering 33 pages of maps, suggestions for hikes, and detailed information on its accesses, routes and campsites.

Edited by Susan Carol Hauser and Linda D. Johnson, the book is the first-ever such guide for North Country Trail hikers in Minnesota, offering information that should appeal to everyone from day hikers to experienced backpackers.

A book signing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Bemidji Woolen Mills, 301 Irvine Ave. NW.

The North Country Trails covers 775 miles in Minnesota, stretching from the tallgrass prairie of the Red River Valley, through the forested northwoods, into the rugged terrain of the Boundary Waters, where it shares the Kekekabic and Border Route Trails, and down to Duluth where it shares the Superior Hiking Trail. Along the way, the trail visits some of the state's crown jewels, including Maplewood and Itasca state parks, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, the Chippewa National Forest, Superior National Forest and its famed Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, numerous North Shore state parks, and 40 miles within the City of Duluth including the popular Canal Park area downtown.

The Guide to the North Country Trail in Minnesota is the creation of the four Minnesota Chapters of the North Country Trail Association. The NCTA is a volunteer-led organization whose mission is to develop, maintain, promote, and protect the North Country National Scenic Trail partnering with the National Park Service. Each segment of the guide was hiked and written up by a local volunteer and compiled by the co-editors.
