Body found following cabin fire east of Ely

A body was recovered following a cabin fire Monday morning east of Ely on Greenstone Lake.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 5:02 a.m. Monday from a 49-year-old man who said his friend of the same age was inside a burning cabin and hadn’t been able to make it out. The cabin was located on the south shore of Greenstone Lake and could only be accessed by water. The Morse Township and Fall Lake fire departments responded but could not save the person inside the cabin.

The body was sent to Hibbing for an autopsy.

The man who called in the fire is from Ely, as is the presumed victim, according to a report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the identities of either party.

The case remains under investigation.

Agencies assisting the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on the scene have included the state fire marshal, the Ely Police Department, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
