Boat capsizes, fisherman spends night in water
At 12:59 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office received a report of a missing boater on Pelican Lake.
The caller reported that her husband went fishing at about 8 p.m. the previous evening and had not yet returned. He was in a 14-foot fishing boat with a nine-horsepower motor. The missing boater was identified as Daniel Larson, 68, of Merrifield, Minn.
Law enforcement officers initiated an immediate search of the shoreline. The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Boat and Water Division assisted in the search and located Daniel Larson at 5:17 a.m. standing in the water near the shoreline by the Halverson Bay public access. He told officers that his boat capsized about 9 p.m. the previous evening and he had been in the water since that time. He was wearing a life jacket and was able to stay with the capsized boat most of the time. He had just reached the shoreline before the officers found him.
Daniel Larson was transported by North Ambulance to Essentia Health - St. Joseph's Medical Center.
The Crosslake Police Department and the Breezy Point Police Department assisted with the search.
