Blue Ox open with pair of wins

BEMIDJI - Ryan Sander and Matt Schneider combined on a no-hitter to vault the Bemidji Blue Ox men's amateur baseball team to a 10-0 victory Saturday at Staples in the team's season-opener.

Sander pitched seven innings to earn the victory. He and Schneider teamed for 10 strikeouts and three walks.

On Sunday the Blue Ox opened its conference schedule with a 12-2 win over Nevis.

Bemidji has moved to a new league this summer, switching from the Norman-Polk Conference to the Northeast Division of the Lake and Pine Conference. The team continues to play in the state's Class C ranks.

Joining the Blue Ox in the division are Nevis, Cass Lake and Leech Lake. Among the Lake and Pine Conference teams in the other divisions are Verndale, Sebeka, Midway, Red Eye, Wolf Lake, Nimrod and Huntersville.

The league playoffs will begin July 21and continue through July 28.

In Saturday's victory at Staples Sander also had three hits, including a 3-run round tripper, scored twice and drove in six runs.

Matt Baier, Brian Jamieson and Duane Biehn all had two hits.

Jamieson was the winning pitcher against Nevis and Nolan Coyle worked an inning of relief.

Landon Harris spurred the offense with three RBI, three runs scored and a double.

Jamieson had a double and a single and Ryan Sander, Joel Conway and Biehn contributed a pair of singles.

Bemidji will be at Leech Lake Saturday and will host Verndale 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
