A recent article in the Bemidji Pioneer listed the Blackduck schools among the area schools failing in state testing. A few days later a correction appeared in the lower corner of page 2 saying that the Blackduck schools should not have been included in that earlier article.

On July 7, the St. Paul Pioneer Press stated that that top seven achieving schools from 79 high poverty schools "defied the odds, posting excellent scores in math and reading across three grades and four years. These schools were also on the excellent list for four years ago. They are Dayton's Bluff Elementary in St. Paul, J.W. Smith Elementary in Bemidji, Nettleton Magnet in Duluth, Blackduck Elementary in Blackduck, Highland Elementary in Columbia Heights, Nevis Elementary in Nevis, and Staples Elementary in Staples-Motley."

The St. Paul Pioneer Press looked only at the elementary scores. But the Blackduck students in both elementary and high school are doing exceedingly well. They have the reputation for success in both college and in vocational schools. Blackduck's graduates have become successful doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, teachers, businessmen and women, mechanics, farmers and truckers.

I am proud of all of them and want the Blackduck schools to get the credit they deserve.
